Il corso di Laurea Magistrale in Medicine and Surgery (SMS) è un corso di laurea magistrale a ciclo unico in Medicina e Chirurgia in lingua inglese.
La collaborazione fra tre Università, due italiane e una britannica, è tra le eccellenze che questo corso può offrire. La sede amministrativa del corso è presso l’università di Milano-Bicocca.
Il corso prevede l’acquisizione di 360 CFU complessivi, suddivisi in attività formative di base, caratterizzanti basate sulla metodologia di apprendimento “Problem Based Learning”, integrative e a scelta dello studente, oltre ad attività di tirocinio pratico e finalizzate alla preparazione della prova finale.
L'obiettivo è quello di formare medici che fin dal primo anno possano acquisire solide conoscenze teoriche e scientifiche, con un approccio orientato alla risoluzione di problemi pratici. Il corso favorisce anche l'acquisizione di competenze per la ricerca in campo biomedico e la consapevolezza dei vantaggi e dei rischi delle nuove tecnologie.
Attiva dall’anno accademico 2017/18, ammette attualmente ogni anno 48 studenti comunitari e non, selezionati con prova d’esame in lingua inglese svolta su base nazionale (IMAT Test). Al termine degli studi viene rilasciato il titolo di Laurea Magistrale in Medicina e Chirurgia che consente l’accesso a Master di secondo livello, Dottorato di Ricerca o Scuole di specializzazione. Il titolo di studio è rilasciato congiuntamente dall'Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca e l'Università degli Studi di Bergamo.
Le attività formative del primo e del secondo anno di corso sono svolte presso le aule del Polo di formazione universitaria Papa Giovanni XXIII di Bergamo, i laboratori dell’ASST-Papa Giovanni XXIII di Bergamo, del Dipartimento di Medicina e Chirurgia dell’Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca e del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Gestionale, dell'Informazione e della Produzione dell'Università degli Studi di Bergamo. Dal secondo anno, le attività formative di tipo clinico vengono svolte presso le strutture e i reparti ospedalieri dell’ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII (e altri ospedali eventualmente inseriti nella rete formativa).
Specifico rilievo riveste l’attività di tirocinio finalizzato al conseguimento dell’abilitazione per l’esercizio della professione di medico-chirurgo, ovvero il Tirocinio Pratico–Valutativo (TPVES). L’attività dura 3 mesi ed è espletata durante il corso di studio, non prima del quinto anno. Il TPVES si articola nei seguenti periodi anche non consecutivi: 1 mese in Area Chirurgica, 1 mese in Area Medica, 1 mese non prima del sesto anno nell’Ambito della Medicina Generale presso ambulatori di medici di Medicina. Il tirocinio pratico-valutativo si considera superato solo in caso di conseguimento del giudizio di idoneità per ciascuno dei tre periodi in oggetto.

The MSC in Medicine and Surgery (SMS) is a single-cycle degree course in Medicine and Surgery in English. The collaboration between three universities, two Italian and one British, is among the excellence that this course can offer. The administrative site of the course is at the University of Milan-Bicocca.
The course allows the acquisition of a total of 360 CFU, divided into basic theoretical activities, characterising activities based on the 'Problem Based Learning' methodology, integrative activities and those chosen by the student, as well as a practical training aimed at preparing for the final exam.
The aim is to prepare doctors who from the first year can acquire solid theoretical and scientific knowledge, with an approach based on solving practical problems. The course also promotes the acquisition of skills for biomedical research and awareness of the advantages and risks of new technologies.
Active since the 2017/18 academic year, it currently admits a total of 48 EU and non-EU students each year, selected by means of an English-language examination IMAT Test. At the end of the studies, the degree of Master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery is awarded. The title allows the access to second-level Master's degrees, PhD or Post-Graduate Schools. The degree is issued jointly by the University of Milan-Bicocca and the University of Bergamo.
The theoretical activities of the first and second year are carried out in the classrooms of the Papa Giovanni XXIII University Training Centre in Bergamo; practical skills are acquired at the laboratories of the ASST-Papa Giovanni XXIII of Bergamo, the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan-Bicocca and the Department of Management, Information and Production Engineering of the University of Bergamo. From the second year, clinical training activities are carried out at the hospital facilities and departments of the ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII (and other hospitals that may be included in the training network).
Of particular importance is the the Practical-Evaluation Internship (TPVES); the traineeship activity aims at obtaining the licence to practise as a medical surgeon. The activity lasts three months and is carried out during the course of study, not before the fifth year. The TPVES is divided into the following periods, which may or may not be consecutive: 1 month in the Surgical Area, 1 month in the Medical Area, 1 month not before the sixth year in the General Medicine Area at GP services. An eligibility certificate is issued at the end of each activity.
